A Little Message:
In speaking of God, or the Supreme Spirit, we will use original non-sexist terms to avoid the argument about whether God is a She or a He.
She + He = Hes (as in Mess)
Her + Him = Hirm (as in Firm)
Hers + His = Hiers (as in Beers)
Example: When God wants, Hes makes things happen according to Hiers will to suit Hirmself.

Master's Words

Activate Your Birthright of Love

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai,
Rome, Italy, May 22, 1999 (Originally in English)

War, trouble, misunderstanding, anger and hatred are all outcomes of our frustration at not knowing God. All the evil we think humankind is capable of doing, comes from this thirst for the knowledge of God. It is ironic and paradoxical, but it is true. Such acts are a desperate call for help, because the people who commit them just don't know what else to do. So they have to resort to violence, just like when you scream out loud.

Why is this so? Because even though we look like humans and wear this human body, we are all children of God; we are the Holy Spirit. We used to live in Heaven, where we had absolutely everything, anytime we wanted it. "Know that you are the temple of God, and the Holy Spirit lives within you." That means that we are nothing but God inside. Because we are God, we're not used to having to work for the things we need. We're not used to having to ask for the things we want, and maybe even then not getting them. So sometimes we feel frustrated, we feel angry, and we feel hopeless and helpless. And sometimes this frustration breeds violence, breeds hatred and eventually, war.

So the people who make war are the people who are really the most desperate for love and for help. But because they are so fixed in their desperation, it is also not very easy to bring love, wisdom and understanding into their state of being--just like someone who is so sick that he doesn't even recognize the doctors, much less feel grateful to them.

So before we fall into this desperate state, we would do better to take care of ourselves and take care that we find the love of God more closely and practically, so we don't ever need to experience this kind of helplessness or deep desperation. No doubt God loves all of us, no matter what we do. Jesus forgives all of us, no matter what we do--even to Him personally. He forgave His enemies and prayed for them: "Father, forgive them, because they don't know what they do." Every time I read something about Jesus again, I always want to cry. Such a great love could only come from God.

We ourselves are all children of God. So why don't we have this love? We do. It's just that we have not activated it; we've forgotten how. We do have love, but not to the extent of the Lord Jesus. Still, we can try to have this love again. God forgives all of our sins; Jesus forgives us--He died for us. And we will be always equal in the eyes of the Lord.

Then why must we know God? Why must we activate this love? Why should we make any effort at all? Because if we do not activate this love, we ourselves will suffer. And of course we will sometimes bring suffering to our loved ones, to whomever is in contact with us, to our surroundings, and sometimes even to our nation, if we make a wrong or a very unloving decision, like making war.

We must activate this love not just to know God, but to know that we are a part of God--that we are one with God, just like the Lord Jesus said: "I and my Father are one." We cannot be one with God by talking alone, by thinking alone, or by wishing alone. We have to actually be one with God, be God on Earth. We have to join that ocean again, become one with the ocean of love. Then we can represent God on this planet. All of Hiers magnificent qualities, all of Hiers loving kindness, we can represent. And we can bring love, joy, kindness and happiness to all the people around us.

Love in Action

Reports on Relief Activities for the 911 Disaster in the United States

"Pray that mankind may understand each other through more peaceful ways... with all love and great sorrow."

This is the wholehearted longing of our loving and compassionate spiritual Master--Supreme Master Ching Hai, amidst Her deep grief over the disasters that struck the U. S. on September 11, 2001.

On that date, the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia were attacked by hijacked airplanes, and another plane was hijacked and destroyed in Pennsylvania. These catastrophes not only shocked the world, but also had a tremendous emotional impact on all of humankind. On learning news of these unfortunate events, Master immediately called all the centers in the vicinity of the affected areas, instructing fellow practitioners to quickly set up relief teams. Her gentle but concerned voice awakened all the fellow disciples on the east coast. She made emergency phone calls to each of these centers, touching and calming all panicky hearts, and linking the fellow practitioners together. As a result, the relief work was launched smoothly and efficiently.

===============================

Master's Reminder about Emergency Rescue Activities
for "911 Disaster" in the U.S.A.

September 11, 2001

I've called many nearby centers around Washington D.C. and New York for emergency rescue action groups. They are doing what they can--giving blood donations, bringing in cell phones for contact, etc...

Please tell headquarters to standby to send any financial request to help centers in aiding the suffering victims in the Pentagon and New York. New York was hard to contact.

Apart from physical comfort, all centers should be informed to gather for group prayers-meditation, so that humankind may understand each other through more peaceful ways.

Report to me the rescue effort process.

With all my love and great sorrow,
Ching Hai

===============================

Master also issued an e-mail expressing Her sorrow to all centers around the world, as well as a request of love to all fellow practitioners: "In addition to providing material assistance, all centers should gather for group prayer and meditation, so that mankind may understand each other through more peaceful ways."

Upon receiving Master's instructions, centers near the affected areas immediately launched relief efforts that included visiting and comforting victims in hospitals, offering blood donations, making financial contributions, providing for the material needs of rescue workers at the disaster sites, and offering mobile phones to facilitate communications. At the same time, fellow practitioners also launched worldwide relief activities, including collecting financial contributions, and conducting prayer-cum-meditation sessions, in hopes that their intense meditation could bring positive power and peace to the world, and promote mutual understanding among humans, so that no such violence would ever happen again. On the other hand, in response to the physical needs of victims, many centers began collecting contributions, and fellow practitioners throughout Formosa earnestly responded to this effort.

Being at the forefront of the disasters that have recently caused serious casualties and shocked the whole world, the New York and Virginia Centers have each set up a relief center on Master's instructions, with all the nearby centers, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Boston, Houston, Kentucky and others, coming to help.

Love1-ny-1-126.jpg: Upon receiving Master's message, fellow practitioners from areas near New York City immediately set up a disaster relief center, and go deep into the disaster site to help with the rescue work.
Love1-ny-2-126.jpg: Rescue workers at the disaster site are enthralled by the Chinese food prepared by fellow practitioners, which they proclaim to be the most delicious food that they have tasted over the past few days.
Love1-ny-3-126.jpg: Fellow practitioners set up a loving-support booth near "ground zero" of the disaster, providing meals and hot drinks to rescue workers laboring hard around the clock.

Here are some reports on the 911 disaster-related relief work carried out by various centers. (Activities are still being conducted around the world and will be reported in the next issue of our magazine):

[New York, USA] The New York Center was divided into many groups to visit hospitals and deliver food for volunteers at the disaster site:

1) Hospital Group: Volunteer initiates prepared clothing, socks, gifts and other supplies to distribute at the Israel Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, New York University Hospital, and Saint Vincent Hospital.

The patients, volunteers and firefighters injured during the rescue activities were very thankful and happy about our group's visit. Upon receiving our gifts, they were touched and our gesture of love comforted their hearts. One firefighter especially asked his family members to remove his oxygen mask in order to thank us directly. It was a very touching moment. Conversely, we were touched by the firefighters' heroic efforts and felt their pain as we saw them lying in their hospital beds. We tried to comfort them by holding their hands, talking to them, and listening to them. By reaching out our humble hands, we learned a great lesson of love.

2) Food Groups: When we broke through many barriers and got close to the disaster site 24 hours after the attack occurred, a heavy downpour began, and although it killed the smoke outside, there were still fires burning inside the rubble, so there was still smoke everywhere. The place had a terrible smell, being a mixture of everything that was burning inside the buildings, and a layer of ash about one inch thick covered the surrounding area.

Wearing Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association uniforms--yellow vests--we set up two separate booths and hung banners reading "The Supreme Master Ching Hai Rescue Team" near the World Trade Center collapse site, and have prepared hundreds of veggie lunch boxes and sandwiches, as well as fruit, hot coffee and other drinks, as the quantity of food demanded at the disaster site has increased each day. We have gotten to know many of the volunteers working day and night without rest, and they have very much appreciated our Chinese food, saying that it is the best food they have tasted over the previous few days. We drove a food van around the disaster site, so that we were able to reach the most dangerous areas, including buildings that were tilted and about to collapse, where no food services were available. Most of the places we visited did not have any food and drink services. Therefore, we jokingly called our van "The Ching Hai Mobile Canteen."

Our booths are not only food and drink supply venues, but also free grocery and pharmacy stores. We basically have everything the people need. Many people come to us because we provide good service with a loving attitude. Some even directly ask for details about our organization and discuss spiritual issues with our initiates. Particularly, the national guardsmen and policemen are very friendly to our organization. They normally check everyone's ID, even those of specialty working people. But when we change shifts, we just show our "Initiation card" and have one of our people from inside bring us in. They have observed our working attitude and are very much impressed by our group's spirit of dedication.

At the collapse site, we are a large volunteer group, consisting of many oriental faces and wearing yellow vests, which attracted local TV Channel 27 to come to interview us. They wondered why we worked so hard, from day till mid night, and we replied that we all have learned from the Supreme Master Ching Hai that we should help others who are in need without racial or religious discrimination, because we are all brothers and sisters.

3) Monetary Contributions: Apart from the above-mentioned relief efforts, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association also contributed a total of US$170,000 to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Firefighter Memorial Fund in New York by cable remittance and check. The contribution symbolized a brotherhood between the groups in cooperation, as we joined together to pursue the same ideal of helping the victims in need. Major Schoch of the Salvation Army was surprised and happy to know that our Master was very concerned about the victims.

Love1-ny-7-126.jpg: Madam Michelle Mulia-Howell from the New York Red Cross receives a contribution from the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association and takes a photo with fellow practitioners.
Love1-ny-6-126.jpg: The commander of the New York Salvation Army, Major Carl L. Schoch, accepts our cash contribution with delightful surprise, as he knows about Master's concern for the victims.
Love1-ny-5-126.jpg: Fellow practitioners load a van with food and circle around the disaster site, delivering food and drinks to the hands of the volunteers.
Love1-ny-4-126.jpg: Our booth does not merely supply food and drinks; it is virtually a free grocery and dispensary.

[New Jersey, USA] Many years ago, Master informed the New York Center to organize rescue teams, but New York initiates never thought they would experience a major attack on their city. Upon learning of the disaster, Master was full of sorrow and called New Jersey residents more than five times to guide them in how to organize rescue teams and join in the New York Center's relief efforts.

With 20 disciples from the Boston Center, a group of fellow practitioners from the New Jersey Center drove to New York City to join members of the New York rescue team, who had joined the Salvation Army (one of the oldest rescue organizations in the U. S.) and the Red Cross to help in relief work for victims of the World Trade Center disaster and visit patients in the hospital. Many people lined up for eight hours to donate blood, and many touching events occurred, as indifferent New Yorkers finally showed their true love for each other.

Communications in New York City in the aftermath of the disaster have not been easy, so our cellular phones from New Jersey have become the main bridge between the disaster site and the relief center, and between many of our centers, since all the TV and cellular phone satellite towers on the World Trade Center totally collapsed in the September 11 explosion. Thanks to God's loving grace, all fellow practitioners in the New York area are safe and able to help others.

[Boston, Massachusetts, USA] While we were in shock after hearing the TV news regarding the World Trade Center attack on the morning of Sept. 11, Master called the Boston Center and asked initiates to go to New York to help the victims of the disaster. Some Boston disciples gathered with New Jersey fellow practitioners, and immediately went to the New York Center to begin working with New York initiates. Without Master's guidance, we would have remained in shock and in a state of mourning.

[Pennsylvania, USA] Local initiates in Pennsylvania held a group prayer and meditation session on the night of Tuesday, September 11, immediately after the attacks on New York City and Arlington, Virginia.

We also walked to the local Salvation Army and American Red Cross in Philadelphia, because New York City had closed its tunnels, preventing entry into the city by car. Both organizations assured us that they were facilitating relief operations to address the New York disaster problems and that our working with them would serve the New York relief efforts.

We contributed US$5,000 to the Salvation Army, so that they would make their own purchases with our cash contribution (money order). Ms. P. Desantis of the Salvation Army said she would be happy to contact members of our organization to serve as volunteers during the ordeal.

[Virginia, USA] On September 11, 2001, Virginia initiates learned that two airplanes had destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. A few moments later, the Pentagon caught fire after an attack from another airplane. The Pentagon is in the city of Arlington in the state of Virginia. As were most people in the U. S., we were in a state of shock and did not know what to do.

However, within a short time, the telephone began ringing constantly. The headquarters of our Association forwarded Master's message that we should begin the rescue effort right away. She asked us to go directly to the disaster areas to help the victims.

We took action right away, however, the route to the Pentagon in particular, and all routes to Washington, DC in general, had been blocked off, so we are unable to enter the disaster site to help.

We then went to the Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, and donated US$ 10,000 to the organization, and next to the Virginia Hospital Center, where many victims had been brought in from the Pentagon for medical diagnosis. The fire at the Pentagon injured many people, but only a few had lost their lives. Many non-profit and voluntary organizations had been organized under a command center to carry out various tasks. We contributed US$ 2,000 to Crisis Link, a non-profit organization handling a suicide hotline and now taking care of telephone calls from people looking for their relatives among the victims, to help with their contact work.

The next day, several fellow disciples from the Kentucky Center arrived after driving 12 hours from their area. They had received Master's message that everyone should immediately try to carry out relief work. We contacted various Red Cross offices and blood donation centers. But so many people had volunteered to donate blood that some had to wait up to six hours in certain places. Next, we received Master's guidance to contact the National Office of the American Red Cross and the National Salvation Army, and contributed US$ 51,000 to each in the name of the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association. The officials and workers of these two organizations were very touched. They offered their gratitude to Master for Her quick action in helping to alleviate the victims' pain. They also received sample booklets and Master's News magazines, and asked us about recipes for vegetarian cooking.

We then went back to the Virginia Hospital Center to find out more about the victims' condition. The local volunteer agencies were running at maximum efficiency; victims were being treated with the best care in one of the best facilities in the world. The Hospital Administrator asked us to leave our number so that she could contact us in the future. We then contacted the local Salvation Army to get information about supplying food to the professional and volunteer workers at the scene. We bought water, bread, cheese and men's work boots, dog food (dogs were used to sniff for people still stuck under buildings), kneepads and sunglasses to supply the workers and delivered them to the Salvation Army to pass on to the Pentagon relief staff.

During this time, we deeply experienced the impermanence of life. Without a living Master to guide us physically and spiritually, we would not have had the confidence and courage to remain calm in order to serve humanity at this tumultuous time in history. We are grateful to Master for helping and guiding us to assist in the relief work.

[Kentucky, USA] On Master's instructions, and disregarding their fatigue, Kentucky fellow practitioners drove through the night to the Virigina Center on September 11, 2001, to have the opportunity to learn the lesson of love.

The 12-hour trip from Kentucky to the Virginia Center seemed longer than usual, since each of us was anxious to be there at the scene of the action. The way to the city is somewhat complicated, especially for those unfamiliar with the area. In addition, we had a sleepless night and a long car journey, so we became lost. However, our initiate driver used his intuition and soon arrived at the right address! Of course, we roared with joy, knowing once again that Master is with us at all times.

[Ohio, USA] Over the weekend of September 15th, fellow practitioners from Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana gathered at the Ohio Center for a two-day retreat to meditate and pray for the victims in the USA and their families.

In addition, daily group meditation will continue to be available at the Ohio Center so that local practitioners can meditate more after working hours during this time of crisis. Let us all keep praying that God's love and wisdom will illuminate anyone touched by this tragedy, so that it may have the most positive outcome for all.

love1-ohio-126.jpg: Ohio fellow practitioners hold lit candles and pray that their meditation merit will go to the victims of the recent US tragedies and their families.

[Houston,USA] Master's call to action awakened us from our initial shock over the World Trade Center and Pentagon tragedies, and helped us to focus on what we could do to improve the physical, mental, and spiritual state of the victims.

Although we are over a thousand miles from the tragedy, our hearts reached out to all the innocent victims of the disaster through group prayer-meditation session that were held each night during the week of September11. In addition, we allocated US$5,000 from the Houston Center's account to use for disaster relief. Finally, we heard on the news that much blood will be needed in the near future and we strongly encouraged all capable initiates to sign up to donate blood in an effort to save lives.

We will continue to monitor this situation closely and if there is anything we can do to help uplift the physical, mental, and spiritual state of the victims we will do it without question. We all pray that this tragic incident helps to unite the people of the world and brings peace in the near future.

[Hawaii, USA] Hawaii Center initiates sent a check for $1,000 to the Bank of America to assist in the September 11 disaster relief efforts. Besides, the Hawaii Center will remain open indefinitely for prayer and group meditation sessions for world peace. We are also encouraging our friends and families to ask others to please pray for all the victims, and their families and loved ones.

[Los Angeles, USA] On the weekend of September 15 and 16, 2001, hundreds of fellow initiates from the Los Angeles Center gathered for a two-day prayer and meditation retreat to benefit the victims of the September 11 attacks in New York City and Arlington, Virginia and their families, and to promote peace for the whole of humankind. Master's blessing power was strongly felt as initiates remained serious in tone but strong in their belief in Her infinite love and compassion, which has the power to melt the hatred and conflicts among people.

Several disciples from the Los Angeles area volunteered to go to help with the relief work being carried out in New York and Virginia by disciples from centers in the eastern U. S. In addition, a number of Los Angeles Center initiates opened up their homes and businesses for extended group meditation sessions throughout the week for an indefinite period, to help uplift the consciousness of the Earth's population and promote greater harmony among humans.

A total of US$20,000 was contributed by Los Angeles Center disciples to assist in alleviating the suffering of the disaster victims and their families. We hope and pray that God will grant Heirs infinite grace to humanity in its future pursuit of peace and freedom, through loving and compassionate means.

[Panama] As soon as local initiates heard news of the September 11 disaster, we became very sad and felt the urgent need to hold a group prayer-meditation session on the same day. So we met that night and prayed for all of the victims who had passed away, that day and dedicated our meditation to the pursuit of world peace.

We were very touched when we received the message that our beloved Master asked everyone to hold extra group prayer and meditation sessions, because we noticed that we had become automatically well connected inside before receiving the message. Let us continue to hold group meditation sessions to pray for world peace, so that everyone may develop tolerance and understanding, and let us dedicate the fruits of our meditation to the enlightenment of all of humankind!

[Sao Paulo, Brazil] From the evening of September 14 to the evening of September 16, 2001, the Sao Paulo Center held a group prayer-meditation retreat for world peace and for the victims of the 911 disaster in the U. S. Even local Convenient Method fellow practitioners participated in the prayer and meditation retreat that weekend. We sincerely pray to God to bless all of the innocent victims and their families, and bestow on human beings a peaceful life.

love1-brazil-126.jpg

[Argentina] Moved by a deep feeling of brotherhood and compassion, fellow practitioners in Argentina gathered to pray and meditate for the suffering souls of the victims of September 11, 2001 disaster. They also increased the regular number and length of sessions for group meditation. Apart from this spiritual support, Argentine initiates sent a humble contribution of material assistance to the US as well.

love1-Agentina-126.jpg

[Peru] In Peru, the only way in which we can help the victims of the September 11 disaster in the U. S. is through meditation, because our economic situation is not very good. Thus, we decided to meditate at the Lima Center on behalf of the victims and world peace beginning from Wednesday, September 13 three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

love1-peru-126.jpg

[Africa] With deep sorrow and sympathy for the U.S Government and citizens at large, and special sympathy for the innocent victims of the September 11 attacks, Uganada, East Africa initiates sincerely encourage local brothers and sisters to continue with diligent practice. With Supreme Mother Ching Hai's love and compassion, they hope the world will become a better and better place in which to love.

Since September 13, Togo, Benin and Ghana initiates in West Africa have started group prayer meditation sessions on behalf of the disaster victims and world peace.

[London, UK] In response to Master's request, initiates in London/UK held their usual group meditation on Sunday, September 16, 2001 to offer special prayers for the victims of the 911 attack in the USA and also for World Peace. Meditation sessions have been extended by one hour for the day and these will now become our regular hours for future group meditations. Initiates here understand the importance of meditation. Several have offered to hold smaller group meditation sessions at their homes during weekdays.

love1-london-126.jpg

[Singapore] Upon receiving Master's loving reminder, fellow practitioners from the Singapore Center held a two-day group meditation retreat on the weekend of September 15 and 16. Hundreds of fellow initiates earnestly participated in prayers for world peace, and better understanding among human beings through peaceful ways. The Center is also collecting contributions from fellow practitioners to help the 911 disaster victims in the States.

love1-singapore-126.jpg

[Hong Kong] Upon receiving Master's message about assistance after the September 11 disasters in the U. S., fellow practitioners in Hong Kong participated in a four-hour-per-day prayer-cum-group meditation activity. The sessions lasted 14 days from September 13 to 26. It was the hope of Hong Kong initiates that the anguished souls of the disaster victims will rest in peace, and that the citizens of the world will learn to resolve their disputes in peaceful ways.

These sessions attracted twice the number of fellow initiates than usually participate in meditation, with some coming for several sessions. At the same time, fellow practitioners collected financial contributions to help the innocent victims and their families in the United States.

love1-hongkong -126.jpg

[Formosa] Upon receiving Master's phone calls, fellow practitioners in Formosa immediately launched a relief activity entitled "Send Our Love to New York." In addition to contributing financial aid to the victims, all centers held several prayer and group meditation sessions. Fellow practitioners who could not attend the group meditation sessions were requested to meditate at home from seven to ten each evening. It was hoped that the focused spiritual power of group meditation could dissolve the negative atmosphere and animosity produced by the attacks, and send God's indiscriminate love to those who had caused the catastrophes and to others in need of love and blessing, so that they will feel the light and love deep in their souls, and refrain from committing further acts that hurt themselves and others.

The Chung Hsiao East Road Center and the Sungshan Bookshop of the Taipei Center were opened for fellow practitioners to come in and meditate and pray. Every Wednesday and Friday evening, prayer and meditation sessions were attended by thousands of people at these venues. In support of the "Send Our Love to New York" activity, fellow initiates at National Taiwan University coordinated their efforts with peace-loving friends on and off campus to disseminate "love cards" at their welcoming party for new members on September 14. Participants were invited to write their wishes on the love cards and tie them to balloons. At noon, the activity reached a climax after a three-minute silent prayer, when the balloons symbolizing peace doves and loaded with countless loving wishes for the 911 disaster victims were released into the blue sky. The Society for Body and Mind Development, established by fellow initiates at National Taiwan Normal University, also held a series of prayer activities for the 911 disaster victims during their welcome party for new members on the morning of September 18.

September 16 was a Sunday. Although northern Formosa has been severely hit by Typhoon Nari, thousands of fellow practitioners from all over the island braved the storm to join the prayer and group meditation session for peace held at the Hsihu Center. Oblivious to the strong winds and heavy rain, they meditated under umbrellas, hoping the power of this thousand-person meditation session could bring comfort to the traumatized hearts of disaster victims, and provide support for fellow practitioners engaged in relief efforts on the frontline. All Formosan fellow practitioners sincerely prayed for world peace and understanding among humans.

Loving Concern Amidst a Typhoon Disaster

On September 16, 2001, just as fellow practitioners in Formosa were praying for world peace and the 911 disaster victims in the United States, Typhoon Nari swept across the country at full strength. Many areas were flooded by the heavy rain produced by the storm, causing heavy casualties.

Typhoon Nari made landfall on northern Formosa, generating a torrential rain heavier than any seen in the region in the last two centuries. The metropolis of Taipei and the surrounding satellite towns were the most severely hit. The heavy rain transformed all of the area's main routes into roaring rivers, and turned the region into an ocean. Civilian residences suffered heavily from the flooding, and the mass transit system was almost completely paralyzed. Innumerable victims were affected by the typhoon, and apart from their life and property being threatened, their accommodations after the disaster also presented a grave and urgent problem for local authorities. Upon hearing news of the Typhoon, our compassionate Master immediately sent a fax message to Formosan disciples extending Her concern and consolation. She also reminded various centers to "get organized to help the typhoon victims".

On the afternoon of Sept. 16, the wind and rain were strong, and the water level was rising constantly. The Keelung Fire Station immediately approached our fellow practitioners and asked for assistance. The China Amphibious Rescue Team formed by fellow initiates in Formosa quickly proceeded to the Bai-fu community near Wu-du in Keelung to undertake rescue work. They labored incessantly day and night, and successfully saved over a hundred people who were besieged by the flood and whose lives had been in danger. The rescue work was extremely hazardous, but thanks to Master's blessing, the rescue team successfully accomplished its task.

On the afternoon of Sept. 18, fellow practitioners again were alerted by the Fire Department that urgent relief was required in the Gao-cheng community of Bar-de City in Taoyuan, so the rescue team rushed to the scene to address the needs of the victims. When passing through Gao-Cheng Road, they were shocked to find that the vicinity near the house of the Chief of the Fifth Community was heavily flooded, and the residents were in grave peril Thus, the rescue team quickly contacted the fellow practitioners of the supporting unit to promptly purchase relief materials badly needed by the victims. Through the concerted efforts of fellow practitioners, all the materials were ready in about an hour. Using a jeep and truck, 80 boxes of dry food and 10 boxes of mineral water were rushed to the Gao-cheng Neighbourhood Office, received by the Neighbourhood Chief, and distributed to the victims.

The Taipei Center also contacted and mobilized local fellow practitioners, and took the initiative to contact the local Fire Department and Municipal Social Bureau, offering to render any type of support required, including supplying daily necessities. As the road conditions were extremely hazardous, fellow initiates had to struggle against many obstacles while purchasing and delivering the relief materials.

On September 18, victims in the Bai-fu community of Wu-du, a heavily stricken area, were on the verge of starving. The Taipei and Keelung Centers thus decided to ask a fellow practitioner, who was a vegetable wholesaler, to help deliver a whole truckload of vegetables, seasoning ingredients, and rice to the temporary accommodations center set up by the local social bureau. Fellow practitioners then noticed that the residents also urgently needed disposable bowls and chopsticks, mineral water and rice. So, they again purchased these items and distributed them to the victims in two batches. Another group of the relief team, after contacting the Cheng-gong Brigade of the Neihu Fire Station, quickly purchased the supplies needed by the victims, including towels, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, biscuits, instant noodles and mineral water, and then delivered them to the Neihu Fire Station in two trucks, to be distributed later at the victim accommodation center in the Donghu Primary School around six PM.

Around three in the afternoon on Sept. 18, fellow practitioners heard on a news broadcast that the Taipei Prefecture Government was badly in need of mineral water, sleeping bags, hand-torches, and batteries. They again purchased 100 boxes of mineral water and 95 sleeping bags, and delivered them to the Taipei Prefecture Government Office in Ban-Chiao that evening. At the same time, they also delivered 60 boxes of mineral water, 50 quilts, and a supply of biscuits to the Taipei Municipal Government Office for distribution. Biscuits and mineral water were also supplied to the Dine-nei Victim Accommodation Center in Keelung.

Beginning on Sept. 18, the Jiayi and Yunlin areas in the south were also engulfed by the encircling typhoon. Braving storm and rain, fellow practitioners from Jiayi went to explore the affected area. The dam in Bei-gang Stream was damaged; fellow practitioners nearby waded through the flood and joined the affected residents to heap up sandbags. Fortunately, the heavy rain stopped not long after, and a catastrophe was averted. At the Golden World residential area in Jiayi, the situation was most serious because the stream bank had given way. After the flood receded the next day, houses were left covered by mud, and the streets by garbage. Fellow practitioners quickly went to help the victims to tidy up their homesteads.

The love, concern and help rendered by fellow practitioners in the aftermath of Typhoon Nari warmed the hearts of many victims struggling in the rain and storm in many places. However, witnessing catastrophes occurring all over the world, with many people losing their lives, property and homes overnight, fellow practitioners are in a state of sober reflection, realizing that, as Master says, "The world is ephemeral; only spiritual practice is most important. Monetary or physical aid on the outside is only a temporary means."

(Remark: The relief work is still going on. Itemized details of relief materials and expenditures will be published later in our magazine.)

Relief Efforts by Chinese Organizations Convey Their Love Municipal Government Appeals for Donation of Essential Items

<New York World Journal> U.S.A.
September 17, 2001, Monday (Originally in Chinese)

[Our reporter Au Guan-yu reports from New York] On September 16, 2001, several Chinese organizations, including the New York and Long Island Branches of the Tzu-Chi Association, and the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, continued to mobilize a large army of volunteers providing food supplies to the rescue workers at the World Trade Center site.

After the WTC attack, the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association set up two supply stations only two streets away from ground zero, working in shifts from early morning to midnight, providing a constant supply of food and drinks to the rescue workers. Their forty-strong team consists of men and women, elderly people and children, working with concerted effort. Some are responsible for purchasing materials and food, some prepare sandwiches and hot soup as fast as they can, and others are engaged in delivery and changing shifts. All of these actions reflect the initiates' devotion to providing physical and mental support for the rescue workers to carry on with their efforts.

Letter between Master and Disciple

Thank You So Much for Coming into My Life

By would-be initiate brother Dejeumo Patrick, Johannesburg,
South Africa (Originally in French)

Dear venerable Master Ching Hai,

You have transformed my life so beautifully that I can hardly find words to express my inner feelings. Your great wisdom, infinite love and teachings have made me a new person, and my view of life has changed tremendously. I pray that the Highest God will bestow longevity on You, so that You can lead more people toward wisdom, the Light, and the path of eternal liberation.

For a very long time, dear Master, I have been praying to God to guide me on to the right path. Hes answered me by bringing me to You. Indeed, You are God's gift to us sentient beings!

Dear Master, forgive me for writing such a long letter, because I want very much to let You know how the Father guided me to You, and how You have come into my life.

Born into a religious family, I thought little about God until my father's death, which changed everything. I often missed my father and kept asking myself, "Where is he now? Is he all right? Is he suffering any pain?" My father was an only son, so after his death, everyone seemed to discard our family. Each night, I spent a long time gazing into the unfathomable sky, and the stars above seemed to tell me, "He is somewhere in the sky."

As the eldest son of the family, I often wondered whether I could bring real "felicity" to my family. Each time this thought came into my mind, I would have a sleepless night. Finally, I started praying sincerely, and decided to put myself in God's hands, and let Hirm guide me toward the path of Truth and take care of everything for me.

After graduating from the university with a degree in information technology, I stayed in my country, Cameroon, to work. Each time I encountered difficulties and felt worried, I would pray to God and ask Hirm to help me solve my problems. I went to church to pray every Sunday, and participated in church activities. However, I failed to feel contented, so I stopped going to church after a while. Nevertheless, I continued to pray at home and study the Bible, hoping to find answers to all kinds of doubts in my heart.

Later, I left Cameroon for South Africa, and before my departure prayed to God, "Oh! Father! My life belongs to You and I have entrusted myself in You. I will comply with Your will. Please guide me Home." When I arrived in Johannesburg, I stayed with a family of Quan Yin practitioners. Their way of life touched me deeply and I received much mental support and love from them. Later they gave me the sample booklet, The Key of Immediate Enlightenment, but I did not read the booklet immediately. Three weeks later, I discussed the Bible with one of the practitioners and was quite amazed by his understanding of the scriptures. His elaboration totally coincided with the world I had been seeking. When I asked him how he came to know so much, he replied, "Dear Patrick, the Quan Yin Method helps me to know a lot of things." Pointing at Your photo, he said, "This Lady has been sent to us by God. You left Cameroon most probably because of the Quan Yin Method, and not because of your career in the computer information sector." I went home and immediately began to read the sample booklet and made cross references to the Bible.

After reading the sample booklet, I was absolutely awed by Your great wisdom and love, because I had not expected that anyone on Earth could possibly elaborate on the Truth in such a pure and incisive way. When reading the chapter entitled "Why People Must Be Vegetarian," I could feel the pain that the meat-eating diet inflicts on animals, and was so ashamed that I cried. I repented and begged for God's forgiveness, and vowed that I would never eat meat again. I decided to follow Your teachings, which are very correct, pure and virtuous. Since then, I have been observing a vegetarian diet. I also prayed more and more frequently; on the first two days of each month, I fasted and prayed incessantly, begging God to guide me towards the Truth.

Four months later, I made the acquaintance of a very cordial friend. One day, when we were having a hearty chat, he suddenly said to me, "You know what, Patrick? You are glowing!" At that moment, I realized that God had answered my prayers. Through Your teachings, Hes had brought Light into my life. No doubt the Quan Yin Method is the answer to all my perplexities. On the following Saturday, I began practicing the Convenient Method, and am now waiting for the Quan Yin messenger to conduct an initiation in my area.

Dear revered Master, I again beg You to forgive me for this lengthy letter, but I really want You to know how You have changed my life. Because of You, I have been able to join this school of divine love and wisdom. For a long time, I had encountered misfortune, and the hardships of life left me in fear and confusion. It is You who have brought back my smile and given me inner peace. Throughout my life, I have never felt so peaceful; I feel as if I have been born anew, and am embarking on a new life.

But one thing that puzzles me is that, each time I take up the Bible to read it, I shed tears uncontrollably. I have difficulty attending to worldly matters, because my mind is fully occupied by thoughts of God. I only have Hirm and You on my mind. Every day, I read Your News magazines, study the Bible, and gaze at Your photos. I can never stop thanking You for becoming my Master. Besides, I often voluntarily contribute money and clothing to the needy, because I want very much to help others.

Dear revered Master, now I know that it was for the Quan Yin Method that I left Cameroon. I need Your divine love and wisdom to find my way back to the Heavenly Kingdom, and to help all suffering people. During all my time in Cameroon, I thought, "I do not live for myself, but for other people." Therefore, I often dream that I can be just like You, and become an Enlightened Master to disseminate the teachings of Truth. Please help me realize my dream. Thank You very much, Supreme Master Ching Hai! Thank You for coming into my life!

Your disciple,
Dejeumo Patrick

Spiritual Interludes

Inspiration from a Myriapod

By brother initiate He Xiang, New Jersey, U. S. A.
(Originally in English and Chinese)

Fellow initiates who come frequently to the New Jersey Center may have seen a kind of invertebrate animal about five or six centimeters long and half a centimeter wide. It has about a hundred pairs of legs. That is why it is called the myriapod. It is usually found in the loose soil under grass or under a thick layer of humus. Its back is black and has many dark red rings. It resembles a centipede. Therefore, many of our fellow initiates are a little afraid of it. But actually, it moves very slowly and is very mild by nature. If you touch it gently, it coils up immediately.

Myriapods often appear in the meditation hall at the Center, which has a rear entrance leading to an area of uncultivated land. A fence in the back yard has been built to keep small animals out, which means that the myriapods have little chance of sneaking in through the back door. Myriapods feed on humus in the fields, unlike ants, which love candy wrappings and cookie crumbs occasionally dropped by careless fellow initiates in the meditation hall. So if the myriapods do visit the meditation hall, it must be for some other purpose than food.

On a Sunday morning in July, fifteen minutes before the 4:00 AM group meditation, about ten fellow initiates and I were in the meditation hall. Feeling drowsy, I stood up and got ready to go out for some exercise and cool fresh air. As I walked down the stairway, an interesting scene attracted my attention. On the slightly white carpet, about ten centimeters from the first step of the stairway, was a well-developed myriapod about six centimeters in length, stretching its body in a straight line and moving toward the stairs leading to the meditation hall. It seemed to be using its full strength as it rushed toward the hall!

I had the impression that this type of animal moves very slowly. But it was moving very quickly very early in the morning, and the meditation hall was its obvious destination. It would not be an overstatement to say that I was truly very touched by the scene. The myriapod seemed to be rushing to an important occasion and, moreover, it seemed to be running late. You could almost see its legs moving together in pairs. Its rapid speed and the accurate direction of its movement impressed me very much.

It was almost four in the morning and there should not have been any good food for it in the meditation hall. From the front door to the hall, it had to pass through the living room, computer room, kitchen, and laundry room, which were all open. Furthermore, the library that our fellow initiates most enjoy is right by the stairway. But it showed no interest in any of these areas; instead, it was heading directly for the meditation hall. It seemed to be rushing to attend the morning group meditation. It must have come far from its habitat to the front door, not to mention that its life was at great risk at each moment after it entered the building. At that time, many fellow initiates were coming for morning group meditation, and someone might have stepped on it.

So I touched its forehead gently. Startled by this unexpected disturbance, it coiled up into a flat circle. I picked it up and went outside. It shrank all its legs so that it could slide away from my palm at any time. Sympathizing with its spiritual loss that morning, I placed it on my right hand and started to recite the Holy Names silently. After I had recited only three Names, I attempted to put it on the flower terrace. But surprisingly, it stretched out its legs and clung onto my palm, refusing to go. Therefore, I said to it silently, "Our merciful Master will take care of you. Don't be afraid. Just go!"

This story is very simple, but highly inspirational. First, the unusual actions of the myriapod must be related to the high spiritual atmosphere in the meditation hall. Obviously, the meditation hall in an ashram is a very holy place. So we should always keep our actions, speech and thoughts pure in order to protect the spiritual atmosphere in a meditation hall.

In addition, the myriapod's actions demonstrated its longing for spiritual nourishment, regardless of any difficulties or risks it might have encountered. In retrospect, if we fellow initiates, who are already Bodhisattvas, still listen to our minds and make excuses for not attending group meditation, we are really unworthy of our precious human body and the grace that Master has bestowed on us.

The myriapod's response to the Holy Names indicates their sacred power. This is a reminder that we should always remember to recite the Holy Names, particularly when we are working, driving or walking outside at night, so that all visible and invisible beings around us can benefit.

Master Tells Jokes

The Dancers Work Too Hard!

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, U.S.A.
October 6, 1999 (Originally in English)

There was a little boy who went with his mother to see the ballet, and it was his first time. After watching for a while, he shook his head and turned to his mother and said, "Mom, why didn't they find some taller girls to do it? Because they are always on their toes. They work too hard!"

Twisted Logic

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, U.S.A.
October 3, 1999 (Originally in Chinese)

An elderly man came to a bar and asked the bartender for ten glasses of beer. He started to drink from the first glass to the last one. After downing all the beers, the man said, "Okay, give me another eight glasses." The bartender did as he was ordered. From one to eight, the man drank them all. Then he shook his head and said, "Not enough, not quite. Give me six more." So the bartender served him six more glasses. From one to six, he finished each glass in the same way. Again he shook his head, saying, "Well, not enough, not quite. Four more glasses should do it." The bartender gave the man four glasses of beer, and he gulped the beer down and shook his head again, saying, "Strange! Two more glasses should do it." So, the bartender gave him two more glasses and he gulped them down. Still he shook his head and slapped himself: "Strange! Let me have only one more" So the bartender handed him a glass of beer and he drank it. Having finished, the man tried to stand up but staggered. He couldn't keep himself straight. At last, he sat down again and said to the other clients in the bar, "Man, it's so odd. The fewer glasses I have, the drunker I get."

Early Precaution

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai, Florida, U.S.A.
October 1, 1999 (Originally in Chinese)

There was an American couple who had no children, so they wanted to adopt a child. Finally, an orphanage contacted them, saying, "We have a baby for adoption. It's a Russian orphan." The couple was delighted and went to bring the baby home.

On the way home, they stopped by a university to enroll in a Russian course. "Why do you want to learn Russian? The English that we speak is a very good language," the university secretary asked.

"Well, we just adopted a Russian baby. When he begins to speak Russian in a few years, we are afraid that we might not be able to understand him," the couple replied.

Teacher's Day Special Report

The Quan Yin Method--the Perfect Educational System

The Vital Foundation

Given that national prosperity hinges on the success or failure of the educational system, governments worldwide have devoted tremendous human and financial resources to educational reform. Regrettably, these reforms have focused more on material considerations than on moral education. Governmental authorities have also overlooked the development of humankind's latent powers. As a result, spiritual development, which is vital for children, has not received the attention it deserves. In the West, students complain that teachers treat them like parrots, because good grades are guaranteed only when the teacher's precise words are perfectly memorized.

When the learning process in school becomes a fixed program of receiving, storage, duplication, and feedback, then education degenerates into a monotonous and boring mechanical process. Not only is this method of learning divorced from real life, it also bores children and suppresses the development of their innate talents. Without true happiness and contentment within, children are attracted to external excitement arising from novel changes. When material superiority and utilitarianism prevail in society, and family values and moral concepts are ignored, youth problems emerge one after another.

Scientists have long known that most humans use only a small portion of their brains. Thus, one of the main objectives of education should be to teach students how to fully develop their inborn potential powers. As Supreme Master Ching Hai says, "When we meditate, we come into contact with the innate wisdom that has always existed within us. Once the connection is established, this innate wisdom provides us with much supportive power, awakens the long-forgotten knowledge within, and lets us develop the power or instincts that we have always had."

Master has also said, "Recently a number of university students in Europe and America experimented with common meditation methods that were not very advanced. They didn't even have to be very diligent to achieve some results; they meditated daily for about twenty minutes and had stunning results. A research study on these students showed a dramatic difference in their intelligence, reactions, and memorization power before and after they began meditating. Before they learned to meditate, their reactions were slower, their memory was not as good, and they were less intelligent. The changes were highly noticeable. They now react more quickly, have a better memory, and are highly intelligent. They can learn much faster than before." (Please refer to "Knowledge and Wisdom" in the News No. 110 for the whole article.) This study shows that meditation is very beneficial for learning and the development of potential abilities.

The Most Complete Learning System

The Quan Yin Method is superior to current educational systems. It opens up wisdom instead of cramming in knowledge; it completely develops potential abilities, and does not limit its scope only to vocational training. It nourishes great love for all Creation, instead of stressing only love among humans. Through daily meditation, we can develop the almighty power within us and increase our learning efficiency; by keeping the Five Precepts, we naturally integrate moral codes into daily life, making up for the inadequacy of moral education in existing systems.

In this material world, teaching can only be carried out through worldly language and physical means. However, there are a great many profound mysteries in the universe that can only be realized by entering the superior realms. The Quan Yin Method is an educational method for entering the superior worlds and an educational concept for the whole universe. Through its practice, our astral bodies can rise to higher realms at any time, to learn from the wiser sentient beings and benefit from the teachings of the cosmic teachers. There are no time or spatial constraints for us to receive this intangible education. Just as Supreme Master Ching Hai has said, "God Hirmself will teach you every day. Whenever you have time, you sit down with Hirm, and Hes will teach you. Hes will teach you through the brilliant Light inside; Hes will teach you through the universal language--the Music of heaven. Hes may even teach you in the Scottish language. Hes will teach you through the ancient masters, who will appear to you just like I appear to you right now, in your inner vision. And you may converse with them, or ask them anything you want, and they will teach you everything that you need to know." (Excerpted from Master's lecture in Scotland, June 05, 1999.) The Quan Yin Method--a complete learning system--will benefit us, turn us into enlightened and happy citizens of the universe, and further elevate us into becoming superior and perfect sentient beings.

Lighting up the Heart

The teaching career has always been regarded as noble and sacred. The teachers' persistent and painstaking efforts have fostered innumerable talents for society, which accounts for the world's civilization of today. However, to keep pace with rapid social transformations, teachers now find themselves facing greater trials than ever before. In our Quan Yin family, there are many fellow practitioners in the teaching profession. What concepts and methods do they employ to educate the future pillars of our society? How do their careers benefit from their spiritual practice? Hopefully, their personal experiences discussed below can provide a reference for other workers in the field of education.

<Insights of a Primary Schoolteacher>

A Happy Career

By fellow initiate "Pencil", Ilan, Formosa

Ever since I started practicing the Quan Yin Method, my work has become easier and more relaxed. Most incredibly, I no longer get angry! Before initiation, I often got so mad over the negative behavior of my students that my stomach would begin to hurt! Now, I can find nothing to be angry about. As Master says, "No one is really bad. It is only because of the situation." True indeed, there are virtually no bad children, only bad habits that need to be rectified. If we can lovingly help children change their bad habits, all children will be benevolent and lovely.

After initiation, we learn more about respecting life, and naturally we imbue the children with this concept. Recently, silkworm-raising has become popular in our school. Every student in school raises them. While most children treat the worms like toys, the students in our class love and care for them as if they were babies. They even carefully prepare bedding for the worms and feed them with mulberry leaves. When any abnormal phenomenon occurs, they anxiously check their health and even prepare a sickroom for those worms that are ill. The students then give them fresh mulberry leaves and pray for them. They do not discard the sick worms, but nurse them until they are dead, and then bury them. In this way, the children have much room to mold their personalities. If their respect for life can become deep-rooted in their hearts, when they grow up, they will definitely treat other sentient beings with the same loving attitude.

After becoming spiritual practitioners, we see things from a different angle, and our values also change dramatically. Following Master, we walk the path of Truth, living a life of accommodation, respect, and love for others. Observing our examples, children naturally will live a nobler life.

Thanks to Master's education, I have not gotten lost in the vain honor of being a teacher and in misleading sentient beings. Instead, my teaching career has become more brilliant and meaningful.

<Insights of a Senior Vocational Schoolteacher>

Unexpected Bonus

By sister initiate Chang Wan-chen, Tainan, Formosa

Several years back, I took a teaching job at a private senior vocational school near my home. I taught psychology. As its name suggests, psychology is a science that helps people understand the mind or mentality of themselves and others. However, deep within, I was aware that this science could offer very little to the true study of human nature and the meaning of human existence. Therefore, no substantial relief could be rendered to people to overcome psychological pain.

Since the students could not find answers to their heavy doubts or satisfaction in acquiring knowledge in this subject, this course was merely another one that demanded their attention and effort. However, during the teaching process, two very special incidents let me realize the psychological needs of these youngsters, and gave me deep insights into human nature.

Once, when elaborating on the theory of "intelligence power," I told the students that when the relevant research was first launched in France, people did not regard "intelligence power" as a permanent inborn ability, because its rate of development differs among individuals--very fast for some and very slow for others. Some perform better in certain aspects, while others show a special interest in other fields; each excels in his own way. Besides, so-called IQ scores mainly reflect the results of knowledge learning and logical thinking ability. Our potential human abilities and talents are much more comprehensive and intensive than these. Therefore, it is inappropriate to judge a person's ability and value by his school grades or IQ scores.

The response from the students during this lesson was very unusual. Usually, only a few students in the class would listen to my lecture; others would be chatting, resting, or reading their own books. However, when I began talking about these concepts, the whole class suddenly became very quiet, and every student gazed at me attentively. From their expressions full of aspirations and emotions, I knew that this had long been a source of distress for them, and I helped them face it that day. This phenomenon was repeated in every class I taught on this subject, which gave me a better understanding of the children studying in senior vocational schools. They had struggled hard in society and in an educational system that placed scholastic achievement above all else, and had been subjected to unjustified appraisals from themselves and others. Thus, they had suffered immensely and unnecessarily. (Senior vocational schools in Formosa are one of the options open to students who fail to gain admission into senior high school; in the past, vocational school students were often looked down upon in society.)

On another occasion, I was giving a talk on the development of children between the ages of six and twelve. Children in this age group actually do not know what "school grades" mean. Their endeavors to earn better grades are motivated by the commendations, encouragement, and affirmation that they receive from adults when they achieve good grades; which can mean that they receive more love in return. Therefore, children of this age group study hard only because they crave more "love." When I was elaborating on this idea, my students at the senior vocational school, who usually put up a jovial and uncaring attitude, again displayed an uncommon attentiveness.

Later, I gave up my teaching career to pursue further studies, but I have often met students that I taught. When meeting them or reflecting on my past teaching job, I feel absolutely at ease. My conscience is very clear that, during my teaching career, though I was under pressure from the school to regard scholastic achievement as the ultimate goal, and to use grades to assess and control students, I still firmly embraced my beliefs and taught my students with love. Although it deprived me of the honor of becoming the teacher who produced the best academic performance among students, I am glad that I did the right thing.

<Insights of a University Professor>

Tolerance, Appreciation,Acceptance, and Concern

Narrated by sister initiate Hsiung, Tainan, Formosa
Compiled and recorded by the Tainan News Group

In her four years of teaching in the university, Sister Hsiung has found that endowments and abilities vary among individuals, and it is necessary to employ different teaching methods for different types of students. Usually, we should converse with them sincerely and find out their true needs. We should not only consider what we want to give them or stubbornly treat them in ways that suit our habits. Sometimes, in order to guide students, it is necessary to use a not-so-positive approach by acting sternly and harshly; we cannot always teach students with affirmation and encouragement.

Taking into consideration the different values of students, we must learn to tolerate and accept them with love, and perhaps even with appreciation. Since practicing the Quan Yin Method, I have naturally forsaken some egoistic concepts, learned to put down my ego and mix with the students, and become one of them. I have also learned how to convey correct concepts, love, and concern to them, in a casual and jovial manner.

As I watch students of different age groups and family backgrounds come and go each year, one of my great realizations has been that I have overcome some hidden problems in my heart. Teaching and learning reciprocally and simultaneously, I have been able to utilize the wisdom derived from practicing the Quan Yin Method, to face and solve difficulties in teaching. In an indiscernible way, I have revealed God's love to Hiers children, and let them feel this peaceful, blissful, tranquil, and positive power in the universe.

<Insights of a Special Education Teacher>

Kindling the Light

Narrated by sister initiate Li, Taipei, Formosa
Recorded by Chang Xue-yun of the Taipei News Group

Sister Li is a teacher of a resource class for the physically and mentally handicapped in a primary school. She has many years of experience in special education, teaching mentally and physically disabled students. Her class consists of students with an IQ of above 50, but whose learning ability is hindered by symptoms such as autism, physical deformations, visual or hearing disabilities, or schizophrenia. These students usually study in the same classes with normal students, but also attend specially arranged resource classes, where they receive special individual training.

All parents want to have healthy children, and many find themselves unable to cope when their children are born with disabilities. With deep feelings, sister Li said: "Both parents and children must learn to cope with such psychological fear and withdrawal." Unfortunately, many parents fail to overcome their fear; they can only hide it in their hearts and weep secretly. Eventually, they abandon their children, depriving these young souls of a sense of security. On the other hand, Sister Li has also witnessed many great parents, some of whom were single parents who bravely walked with their children out of the shadows to face the challenges of life together. Here is a statement made by a famous disabled warrior in Formosa: "God simply joked with me to let me experience the radiance of life through my own endeavors!" Not every disabled person can live in such a cheerful and unrestrained manner. They need many people to light up their lives, show them the way, and give them timely support and encouragement. These people subsequently win their trust and help them further to open their long-locked hearts."

By practicing the Quan Yin Method, sister Li feels that an inner power is constantly supporting her, giving her greater love and patience to carry on with her arduous work. When teaching this group of children, she accepts and identifies with them, without pampering or over-protecting them. To fulfill her educational responsibility as a light kindler and guide, she finds all kinds of flexible ways to build up the trust of children, and to show them that she wants to help and guide them, and will never abandon them.

In her resource class was one first-grader, who had very young parents. Since the child was born with a hearing deficiency, they felt deeply hurt and locked the child in their home, giving him no sense of security. When the child first came to school, he was autistic and often refused to learn or have any contact with his schoolmates. His teacher, therefore, arranged for him to attend sister Li's resource class. When his classmates from the higher grades were joyfully engaged in speech training for those students who are disabled in hearing, he always sat alone in a corner. Sister Li tried every way that she could think of to guide him, but he always responded by crying.

Even then, sister Li never gave up on him. She loved and cared for him as if he were her own child. Under her persistent loving guidance, the boy finally showed some improvement. He stopped crying, and even talked about the television program that he had watched at home the day before. Every day, he would bring something for sister Li.

When the students from the higher grades encountered unhappy incidents, they would also pour out their grief to sister Li, who patiently exchanged ideas with them and took the opportunity to prepare them psychologically to handle such situations. She let them understand that, when a person makes a greater effort than others and goes through more setbacks and ordeals, his life becomes more meaningful and shines with greater radiance.

Spiritual Cultivation and Life

Jovial Little Angel

By sister initiate Lien, Ilan, Formosa

"Papa! Papa!" When I heard my child utter these words for the first time, I was a bit amazed, and wondered, "Is it possible that a child less than a year old knows how to say Papa?" When my husband, a brother initiate, came home and heard my story, he was overjoyed. The very first words that his small child uttered were Papa! However, after a few days of careful observation, we found that the child often put his little hands on Master's photo on the wall and gazed at Master while saying "Papa!" He was calling Master "Papa"!

When I became pregnant with our child, I began listening to Master's Buddha's Chanting tape and videotaped lectures, as well as some sweet and soft music every day. It was my most sincere wish then that our child would practice the Quan Yin Method with us in the future. Eventually, our child was born, and grew up day by day. Our favorite pastime was taking him out for a stroll in the evening, sometimes to the park to watch the beautiful flowers and plants, sometimes to the seaside to listen to the ocean waves, or sometimes to the forest just to be with Mother Nature. Occasionally, when we had work to do at the local center, we would also bring him along to gain experience. All of our relatives and friends noticed the ethereal elegance of our child, who had been a vegetarian even while in his mother's womb. Determined to raise the child the best I could, I quit my job and devoted myself entirely to being a mother. I played games with him every day, hoping that he would have a happy childhood.

When he grew a little bigger, I let him watch some educational cartoon films, and told him inspirational stories; he even learned how to play the audiotapes himself. After the book Master Tells Stories was published, it became his beloved bedtime storybook. In our home, Master's Buddha's Chanting is constantly playing, and soft music is also always echoing in the background. For quite a while, he was so fascinated by the spiritual songs that he listened to them for several weeks without getting bored. Under such an intense influence, he showed great interest in painting and music, and also acquired the habit of reading.

Beginning from his infancy, we often meditated by his bedside when he was sleeping. If he woke up occasionally, he would not disturb us; he seemed to acknowledge the right of his parents to meditate. Now and then, he might mischievously touch us for a brief moment, and then go out to play by himself, though there were also times when he would sit with us for a short while. When he was only five going on to six, he requested initiation and received half initiation. Since then, our whole family has been able to meditate happily together.

Of course, a child inevitably makes mistakes. If it is a minor mistake, I counsel him patiently and then he improves. When he makes a grave mistake, I tell him to bring his cushion and repent before Master's photo. I then ask him what mistake he committed, and tell him to always remind himself not to repeat the mistake again. I always feel that he is smarter and more understanding than his peers. As parents, we often chat with him and spend intimate time with him. Therefore, he tells us his problems, instead of hiding them in his heart. Though he is shy and introverted by nature, he is also cheerful, optimistic, and very resolute. His social interactions in school are very good, and his classmates often come and play at our house.

We often remind him, "Spiritual cultivation and meditation always come first, as does moral conduct. Next in priority are health and artistic endeavors. As for school work, just do your best." We even prepared a daily review checklist to help him remind himself at any moment. Sometimes, we read and explain Master's aphorisms to him, and then ask him to express his opinion, or let him explain their meaning. In this way, we hope we can help him walk smoothly on the spiritual path. Occasionally, he will also remind us of what we have done wrong; he is really a good fellow initiate for us.

On the long journey of spiritual practice, he is a little angel bringing much joy and color into our lives. Compared to other children not engaged in spiritual practice, he is noticeably more elegant and pure. He is refined in demeanor, pure at heart, and stable in character. Now and then, under the influence of his schoolmates, he might show some negative traits, but after we explain and analyze the pros and cons with him, he can always understand and promptly rectify himself. We firmly believe that, as long as we can give him a favorable environment, and bring him up in accordance with Master's teachings, our son will naturally walk on the right path. We are extremely grateful to Master for bestowing on us such a lovely little angel. From him, we have learned many lessons. May God bless him to be always pure and innocent at heart, and stay forever with the Quan Yin Method.

Master Tells A Story

From Stone to Saint

Spoken by Supreme Master Ching Hai,
the San Jose Ashram, Costa Rica, June 2, 1991 (Originally in English)

That's the Indian custom, to always run to the seat of the saints. They believe that saints are like the sandalwood tree, transferring to every tree around it the fragrance of sandalwood. Yes, this is true.

Relocating for a Child's Sake

In China, there was a story about Meng Tzu. Meng Tzu was a very wise man of China, one of the saints. But he had a saintly mother, so that's why.

When he was a child, his house was next to a slaughtering house that killed animals. So he went to see the people who slaughtered the animals. When he came home, he began to catch all the small animals, like frogs, cats and dogs. And he also began to slaughter them, because he imitated what he saw.

Children imitate everything, good or bad. I didn't; I did not imitate. I remember many of my cousins and the neighbor's children always went and fetched birds, and would roast them and eat them. And they killed all kinds of insects, making them become like their toys. I never did this; I never liked it. But most children imitate things, whether good or bad.

So when the mother saw that the child had developed this very bad habit due to their neighbor's influence, she moved, because of him. She said, "This is not a good place for my child." She was a saintly mother. And they were not wealthy. I think she was alone. Her husband wasn't there; maybe he was dead. She raised the child alone as a weaver, weaving cloth. She was very poor and didn't earn much money weaving cloth. Even then, she sacrificed her time, energy and money for her child. Can you imagine how saintly that is? That's why I say she was a saintly mother. And in ancient China, moving was not easy. There's no transportation, no one to help you, only the mother and the child. You can imagine how difficult that would be.

So she moved to another neighborhood. Some time later, she discovered that her child came home every day wailing and crying, making a ceremony for the dead. He was making a funeral service every day. And then she discovered that they lived very near a funeral home; that's where he learned it. So she said, "This is not a place for my child."

She moved again, for the third time. Then, at last, she moved next to a school, where they taught about Confucius and all the saints' teachings. And the child came home behaving like a saint! He had all the manners of a good scholar and the thinking of a saint--very polite, very noble and very saintly. So the mother said, "Wow, this is the place for my child."

And then, when this child grew old enough, of course, he went to school. He liked going to school. He said, "I like it!" He liked to be like the scholars, so he went to the school. But one day he became fed up with the school for some reason. Probably the teachers had scolded him or his roommate wasn't nice, or else he was lazy. So he went home and went to sleep, in the middle of his classes. He didn't want to go to school any more.

A Cut in the Cloth

The mother used all her logic to persuade him to go back to school that day, but he didn't. He said he didn't want to and was very insistent and stubborn. The mother was weaving a piece of silk at that time. After he had been so stubborn, she took a knife and cut across the piece of silk she had woven. And then she asked the child, "Can we use this piece of silk now? Can it be useful?" And the child said, "Of course not! Why did you destroy it? Why did you cut that piece of silk when it was so perfect?" And the mother said, "Well, it is like your education. If you don't continue, it's of no use. If you break it in the middle, what is the use of before and after? Something broken in the middle is of no use."

It's the same with our practice. We should also continue every day. Otherwise, even though it's beautiful before and it might be beautiful after, if it's broken in the middle, it's not a continuous flow. And we will experience some kind of difficulty or obstacles or uneasiness in our life. We cannot expect things to go smoothly and easily, the way we want, all the time. We must learn to take and to give, to be strong and also to be flexible, when the situation requires. Otherwise, we will have a lot of trouble during our life, and we will never grow up.

The Forgotten Mother-saint

If the mother of Meng Tzu had been a very ordinary mother, then today we would never have heard of the name Meng Tzu. He would never have left his name in the history of sainthood. And in China, there are so many people, a vast number of people, with vast lands. To be listed in the names of these vast people and vast lands--as one of the handful of saints-is not easy. To make a name for yourself in China, where there are so many people that you cannot count them all-to make a name distinguished from these masses--it's not easy! And they have four or five thousand years of history; to be distinguished as one of the few is not common.

But people have forgotten his mother. They don't know who she was or what she did, only that she cut pieces of silk and moved three times. But her actions were worth more than all the lectures that Meng Tzu ever offered to the public. She is worthy to be a master, a master of all time. She was master of all mothers, of all the masters! If she weren't a saint and a wise woman, she could have never sacrificed so much in her situation and in her poverty.

Can you imagine what Meng Tzu would have become without such a mother--a brilliant saint who would have been contented with killing animals every day for a living? So you see how saints are made. We can make saints out of stones. I think I will start a manufacturing plant for building saints. We could! Just give them good examples, a good environment and good lectures, and they will become saints.

The Importance of Childhood Education

The Tibetan people train their monks from childhood. Most of the monks learn from childhood. They come into the monastery when they are young, mostly as orphans or poor children whose parents cannot afford to raise them; they get offered completely to the temple and never go back home. So they are trained from childhood, and that's how they grow up. Even if we don't say anything about their levels of sainthood, at least their manner and behavior are very sweet.

So everything we were taught in childhood is very important. I guess my grandmother and my father were good teachers for me. My grandmother used to make me read a lot of books to her because she couldn't read; she was very old. I read her all the philosophical books that were meant only for adults, but she was very fascinated by them. And I loved her; I was always sticking around her, so I was the one who read a lot for her. And I was more fascinated than she was. Sometimes she went to sleep or she was busy, and I would read them all by myself. So I read all the things that a child should not read, like Chuang Tzu, Lao Tzu and all kinds of Chinese and other cultures' philosophies. In the evening when I slept, I would fly around meeting saints and things like that. And I had all kinds of magical powers in my dreams. Anyhow, I guess that's what made me become what I am today; it had an influence. In the world today, people teach pregnant mothers to read good books and imagine beautiful faces, or hang beautiful pictures in the bedroom or around the house, just to make a beautiful baby, to plant noble ideas into the fetus. It helps.

The Parents' Sacred Mission

Actually, the parents are commissioned by God to teach Hiers children. But most parents do not remember their duty. They love the children but they think of the children also as property, that the children should grow up and make a name and make money for them, to repay them for their kindness. So most of the time, they emphasize more to the children that they have to go to school, they have to learn a craft, or they have to do this and do that. There's really no moral motive behind it at all, just a monetary motive. This is just most of the time; I don't mean all families are like this. But the people who are like that teach each other--that you have to spend 10 years or 20 years in education just to get a position, to earn good money, to get a good husband or wife and to be secure in life. This is always emphasized in our society. And then if they have a religious background, they send their children to the priests, and the priests know nothing.

So that's how we are left alone to struggle for ourselves spiritually in this world. If we are not lucky enough to happen to stumble into a saint or the saintly teaching of a living Master, can you imagine how we carry on with our life? You're born and you die and you have only one ideal in your head: making money, gaining position, and raising children, like raising ducks, pigs, or any other animals. If we as humans don't have a higher ideal about life and God, we are just like the animals. But how do you find a teacher who will teach you anything like this? We have been brainwashed for 15 or 20 years in school, just for money! Let's face it; that's the only motive. It doesn't matter how much flour they put around it or pepper and chili on top to cover it, it is all for monetary purposes, nothing else. And not only to earn enough money for a living; sometimes money tricks people into selling their dignity and forgetting all their moral standards.

That's how the society teaches us, even our family members. Of course, not all families are like that. Thus, we should earn money or have a position to take care of ourselves, but not to the extent of forgetting everything else. That's why we are very far away from God. If we are near God, it must be a money god, or a banker god!

A Thief's Story

There was a story about a thief, a very, very great thief. He committed so many crimes and killings that the government decided to hang him. So, before a person is executed, he is entitled to one last personal wish. He was very famous; they had hunted him for many decades before they caught him. He was a big robber, without any repentance and without any conscience. He killed people like chopping bananas.

Now his last wish was that he wanted to see his mother. Everyone was surprised that he even had affection for his mother. But they thought, "Well, in the whole world no one probably loves him, so he must have love for the mother. And the mother is the only one who loves him, so it's natural that he wants to see his mother."

So the mother was fetched to see him. And many people came to see his execution because everyone knew about him. It was a big gathering, and he was in the middle. Then the mother came, and he embraced her. Suddenly, the mother began crying very loudly and then fainted on the ground. On the side of her head, she was bleeding. Then people saw that in his mouth there was her ear. And the people rushed up to him, saying, "What happened? Why did you bite your mother's ear off?" So he took the ear up and pointed to the mother and said, "She is the real criminal, not I. You made the wrong judgment."

And he started to tell the story. When he was a young schoolboy, his family had enough to live on; they weren't poor but weren't wealthy. One day, he forgot his pen and he borrowed one from his classmate. But he forgot to give it back, and he brought it home. And he told his mother, "Oh, look, I forgot to give back my classmate's pen that I borrowed! I must go back and give it to him now because otherwise he will miss it."

And the mother said, "No, no! You keep it! Keep it! Tomorrow you borrow ink and then books, and don't give them back. See what happens. Then I won't have to buy them for you. If they forget, it's good. What's in your hands belongs to you. What you can take is yours." But when some of the classmates wanted their things back, the child didn't know what to do. So he came home and said, "Mother, they want their things back! Can I give them back? Is it OK?"

And his mother said, "No, no! Next time you have to punch them! Say, 'No, it's mine!'" She taught him how to steal by force, even in childhood. So slowly he stole bigger and bigger things for himself and for the mother, at the mother's command. First he bit people, then forced them, and later he killed. He killed even when it was not necessary; it became a habit.

Seek the Company of Saints

So you see, originally he was a very honest child; he wanted to give back the t
